Indishe started his martial
arts training at his early age with the Shorin Ryu Shorinkan Karate Club of his
high school, Ananda College, Colombo, a leading high school in Sri Lanka. He gained his Shorin Ryu 1st Dan Black belt there, and worked as the captain of the school karate team and an instructor.
He was awarded at the school's Colors Nite in 2000.
During this time, he began practicing Shoko Ryu Renbukai Karate and received his
1st Dan in 2000.
Indishe Sensei was appointed as the Representative of Sri Lanka for the Okinawa Shorin Ryu
Karate Do Kyudokan Association in 2002 under the patronage of Higa Oscar Sensei (10th Dan Hanshi, then, the World Technical Director of Kyudokan) and Higa Minoru Sensei (10th Dan Hanshi, President of the Kyudokan Federation).
Indishe participated in the World Okinawa Karate & Kobudo Tournaments held in 2003, 2009 and 2018 in Okinawa, the birth place of Karate. He continuously trained mainly under Higa Oscar Sensei, and also with Higa Minoru Sensei and other senior instructors of the Kyudokan School.
He started training with Ryukyu Kobudo Ryukonkai Association, headed by Iha Kotaro Sensei (10th Dan- Hanshi) in 2003 and appointed as the Sri Lanka representative in 2006. He also started training Chen Style Tai Chi under Master Liu Yong in 2006, and therafter with many of senior students of his master.
Indishe was promoted to Godan (5th Dan) in Shorin-Ryu Kyudokan Higa-te Karate-do by Grandmaster Higa Oscar in 2015 and Sandan (3rd Dan) in Kobudo by Iha Kotaro Sensei in 2009.
In 2009, he built a traditional Okinawan-style of dojo in his hometown, Moratuwa, (Heiwa Dojo, the Little Okinawa) in Sri Lanka to teach the true spirit of Okinawan Karate to many students. He received the 'Man of the year in Martial Arts Award' in 2006 from the Karate Times Magazine of India and a number of international awards in martial arts. He also has written many articles to martial arts magazines on Karate history, philosophy and technique.
Indishe Sensei is popular among many Shorin Ryu practitioners over the world for his YouTube videos, especially for his technical proficiency in Kyudokan Higa-te Karate-do, with over 200,000 views for his Pinan kata series video.
Indishe graduated in B.Sc. Engineering from University of Moratuwa and then got his Master of Philisophy (MPhil degree) from the same university. He moved to Australia for his PhD studies in 2006 and completed his doctorate in 2020 at the University of Newcastle.
Currently, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher.
He was appointed as the Representative for whole Australia of the Shorin Ryu Kyudokan Higa-te Federation by Higa Oscar Sensei. In Australia, he participated in a couple of tournaments organized by the International Sports Karate Association (ISKA) and won gold and silver medals in Karate and Kobudo events.
He's running small classes and individual training sessions in Newcastle area, NSW at the moment.
